Oliver Otter, You Otter Be Water Wise
Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona
Oliver Otter, You Otter Be Water Wise is a water-safety program that teaches important water-safety rules to young children and adults. The program's goal is to prevent death and disabling brain injuries resulting from drowning or near drowning by teaching children and adults the importance of following good water safety rules.
The Oliver Otter safety program was developed by the staff of the Children's Health Center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.
The death of a child is devastating to a family. Many "near drowning" children survive with results that can be just as heart breaking. Often the lack of oxygen, for even a few minutes, can lead to severe brain injury. It is even more devastating when it could have been prevented.
The Oliver Otter program includes the following components:
- A video that teaches children and adults how to be water wise around water
- A story about Oliver Otter and the importance of keeping toys away from water
- A fun, playful mascot of Oliver Otter that visits children and stresses that they need constant supervision around water and that no child is "water proof"
- Educational material that stresses water safety information
